La città è situata nella parte più isolata della baia di Cattaro (Boka Kotorska). Risalente al periodo degli Illiri, Cattaro è diventata un importante centro commerciale e artistico durante il Medioevo. Nel corso dei secoli, molti imperi si sono battuti per il controllo della città: prima città autonoma dell'Impero Bizantino, poi città della Serbia medievale, in seguito sotto il dominio ungherese e veneziano, la città ottiene l'indipendenza per poi tornare sotto il controllo veneziano ed essere occupata da Francia e Austria e, infine, diventare parte della Iugoslavia.

Il tour di Cattaro inizia presso la porta principale della città vecchia, conosciuta anche come la porta del mare (Morska Vrata), dove incontrerai la tua guida. Il tour ti condurrà all'interno delle mura della città, dove potrai visitare:

Torre dell'orologio
Piazza di farina e i palazzi Pima e Buca
Cattedrale di San Trifone, con un breve tour guidato
Piazza navale di Bokelian con la fontana Karampana
Piazza San Luca, con le chiese di San Luca e San Nicola
Basilica di Santa Maria del fiume (la beata Ozana)
Porta nord sul fiume Scurda

Dopo il tour della città si ritorna alla piazza d'armi.

This tour was a rousing success. Our guide was very in touch with the situation. He was funny, kept us in the shade when possible, and kept us moving. Kotor old town is quite compact which is good for a walking tour. We saw just about the entire walled area and had time left over to enjoy both some gelato and local wine. This was a fun tour with no challenges to complete, even for persons with walking difficulty. There was only one set of stairs in a church which deserved our time and attention. The second floor provided worthwhile views of the square below. This was a good choice for an overview and free time after completion.

Jelina was our guide. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave a very good tour of the Old Town. It was obvious she was proud of her country and she shared a lot of history and anecdotes with us. Highly recommend Jelina and the Old Town of Kotor Walking Tour. She showed us how to get around on our own after the tour as well. Make sure to visit the Cats Museum during your free time.

Our guide met us in the exact location as described. He was extremely knowledgable about Kotor and Montenegro and was very accommodating to our group when we endured a thunderstorm that caused a power outage to the whole town. A great value and would recommend to anyone, especially those traveling by cruise ship.

This review is a little late, and we should definitely have posted sooner! Our guide, Jelena, was excellent! We never felt rushed, as she walked us through the old town, and along the walls of the city. Of course, the city itself is stunning, but Jelena's knowledge of the city, and it's history, made it even more interesting. Her English is flawless, and she has a wonderful sense of humour! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, and would recommend it for anyone travelling to Kotor.
